The distant call of a cockerel signals morning. The sun has not quite risen, but darkness is receding.
Ubud Sunrise
Arriving in Bali yesterday, we began our journey to Ubud through a chaos of scooters, trucks and cars, horns sounding. Passengers on scooters carried lengths of timber balanced across their shoulders; another had a huge suitcase wedged between the driver and passenger. Wending our way through villages and taking shortcuts along narrow backroads, all expertly manoeuvred by our beautiful driver, Ketut.
A glimpse of local life. Simple old shops lining the streets, timber sculptures, twisted and smooth, stretching skyward. Street food. Enormous stone figures.
Offerings lay on the ground along the footpaths and in driveways. My gaze rises to a spaghetti tangle of cables, the conduit of power through Bali. I am amazed at the seemingly effortless way life unfolds amidst it all.
